Bur Oak

Quercus macrocarpa

The Bur Oak is sure to become one of your favorite oaks. Bur Oak is a large, deciduous tree with an open crown. Most oftentimes it is found in open prairies. It’s often wider than it is tall.

In urban environments, it can be expected to grow up to 55’ tall, though in its natural settings it can grow more than twice that size in height and width.

Some Bur Oaks have been reported to be nearly 1,000 years old.

The species Latin species name macrocarpa refers to the large acorn. The common name “Bur” describes the cup of the acorn which looks like the spiny bur of chestnuts.

Bur Oak has several claims to fame. These mighty oaks:

  • extends furthest north of all native North American oaks

  • slowest growing oaks

  • most fire, cold, and drought resistant oak
