Wilákal-California Buckwheat
This wonderful plant has been cherished for generations by Indigenous communities around California. We are grateful for Mr. John Machado, member of the Cupeño Nation ) Kuupangaxwichem Nation), for sharing this recording of the pronunciation of the Cupeño word for California Buckwheat. The Cupeño are an Indigenous tribe of Southern California from around present day San-Diego. Today their descendants are members of the federally recognized tribes known as the Pala Band of Luiseño Mission Indians, Morongo Band of Cahuilla Mission Indians, and Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeno Indians.
